2007:
Thursday - Two More Sleeps
Started the morning off the way yesterday’s
ended, with a Skype from Jo Lawn. Like many
others, we share a love for a good cup of
coffee. She felt the need to let me know she
had an awesome cup in front of her. She had
nothing on me though. Sam had gotten up early
and even though she’s not drinking it, she’d
brewed a spectacular pot of Kona coffee for
Cliff and I. Jo and I did a virtual toast and
the day was well begun.
I ended up puttering around here a little too
long and realized I was running the risk of
arriving late for my date with Desiree. I
jumped on the Magna and TT’d down to the pier.
Once again the sweat was rivering (still liking
my new word) off my body when I met her there.
I didn’t realize just how disgusting I looked
until I checked the photo log later. I’m going
to have to send the lady flowers. What a
sport.
Her intention was to try out the new speed suit
from Blue Seventy. Brian Rhodes, who is working
with Blue Seventy, scored me a pair of their new
goggles and, with those in hand, Desiree and I
jumped in for our swim. The goggles were good
but I would have needed binoculars to keep
Desiree in sight. After about fifty meters I
spotted Paul Regensburg on a canoe and tried to
climb in but he hit me with the paddle and I
floundered back to the beach – bowed but not
broken.
Desiree said she loved her new suit and would
certainly be wearing it on Saturday.
Unlike previous days, I had nothing else planned
until the pro meeting at 1 so I did what most
people with nothing to do, do in Kona. I read a
magazine at Lava Java and ate a cinnamon bun
bigger than my head.
Two days before the race most knowledgeable
athletes do little or nothing in the way of
training. I was shocked to see Alii drive as
crowded as ever with ripped athletes blazing up
and down the road – wrist bands gleaming in the
sun.
The only pro I saw was Faris but he was running
slower than I would in zone one.
Pedalled home and spent the next two hours
answering the hundred and eighty seven emails
that had been building up, then chatted for a
bit with one of my favourite people, Heather
Wurtele (thank you Skype). I’m looking forward
to see what she can do here in a year or two.
After a short nap it was time to head back to
the pier for the pro meeting.
Nothing special to speak of about that except I
did run into Cheryl Murphy. This will be
Cheryl’s first Hawaii gig. She was fifth at
Canada this year and was thrilled to be here.
The girl can run. It’ll be fun to see how she
goes on Saturday.
Also spoke to Tim DeBoom and he wanted me to
make sure I said hi to Pete – Hey Pete!
Tim is lean, relaxed and ready to tear some legs
off!!
After the pro meeting Cliff and I picked up some
more Ahi Tuna and did another nice bbq for
dinner.
A few episodes of season ten of South Park
finished out the evening.
Tomorrow I do not have one single plan. I
expect it’ll be a ghost town down there. |
