October 20,
2006:
T-Mac
arrived without incident. It turns out he has
done some
surfing in his past. With that kind of experience we
elected to pass on the boarding practice. Should be quite
interesting out there tomorrow morning. After a quick stop,
where we finally bought some razorblades we decided to head
out to Magic Sands Beach and play in the waves a bit. Now I
should preface this by saying that I have a healthy fear of
waves. I’ve been slammed a few times in my life, lost
goggles and lost skin. I know how much damage moving water
can do. So when we got there I’m the cautious one – last in
and first out. I instantly clear the break and swim out
past the danger zone. From there I tentatively work my way
back in and body surf a few of the smaller waves. Magic
Sands Beach is a nice place but there’s only about twenty
meter of safe sandy beach to exit the water. Either side of
this rough area and you’re into some treacherous lava rock.
I guess you can see where this story is going. I was so
sure I was coming into the safe zone. I wasn’t. I was
getting tumbled by a wave, I reached down for the sandy
floor and found lava.
For
the next 2 minutes I got pummeled by wave after wave into
the rocks. For forty seconds of those 2 minutes I honestly
felt my well being was serious jeopardy! I finally managed
to get some footing and make my way out of there, but not
without leaving my dignity and some DNA on those rocks! I
stood up straight and tried to get some cool going as I made
my way back to T-Mac and PR. They hadn’t seen the fiasco.
PR was pointing to his leg where a drop of blood was running
down. I guess he’d had a bit of trouble reaching shore as
well. I told the boys I’d had a bit of trouble myself and I
thought my back may have taken a hit. I turned around and
was told that the next stop was going to be the pharmacy.
It kind of looks like I came off my bike at a fairly high
speed.
After
a long shower (I learned that conditioner hurts on open
wound as much as shampoo), a cold beer and a short nap I was
ready to hit the media party for Oakley. Great event. They
unveiled the new Oakley Radars and demonstrated the
superiority of their glasses with some fun demos! They also
had lots of good sushi and cold beer. I tried to charm
Sarah Reinertson out of the ending to the Amazing Race but
my efforts got me nothing but a chuckle from the lovely
young lady.
After that
we went for a drink with Huddle, PNF, Murphy Reinschreiber
and his wife Shannon Delany (hope I got all the spellings
right). I was bragging about my all-access wrist band that
I’d been assured would get me everywhere, with it’s four
symbols prominently displayed, when Paula flashed her band
with FIVE symbols! Put me in my place!
We have to
be up at 4 in the AM so I’m going to cut this one short but
look for another report in the next 24 hours. We’ll do the
best we can to let the Webguy know what’s going on out
there!!
It occurs
to me as I sign off here, I bet there are a lot of nervous
sleepers out there tonight!!
