DAY 2 - GETTING SETTLED

October 17, 2006: Woke up this morning in a panic.  I hadn’t put together a swim workout for the Team X Triathlon club I coach Tuesday mornings and I had to be on deck at 7:15.  Then the ground shook with an aftershock and my senses came back to me.  I was in Kona and I wasn’t going to the pool this morning.  The club would be in the good hands of head Coach Chater.  He’d have to put up with Andrea complaining about the kick sets this morning.  But like most triathletes, she’ll bitch but then work hard anyways.

We rolled in to the house around 9 o’clock last night to find that Pete’s buddy and all around nice guy, Peter Hahn (hereafter to be called PH) was already at the house.  He’s here to launch his documentary “What it Takes” He was shooting the film when we were here last year.  Though it must be stated that he let the team down a bit when we opened the fridge to find it void of beer, void of everything in fact.  I jumped into the van and fifteen minute later we were enjoying a cold one on the deck.  Yes, this certainly was going to be a different trip!  PH passed on the beer.  It turns out he’s in taper mode for his first serious marathon.  He’s doing Chicago on Sunday.  He’s quite nervous about the whole thing.  We’re going to have to tease that out of him.

Pete and I rolled down to Lava Java and got ourselves a muffin and an Americano.  We sat on the curb and discussed predictions for Saturday – another change over last year.  Last year we didn’t talk about the race – at all.  I’m a self proclaimed tri geek.  I admit it.  I’ve got to have the latest gadgets and I love to chat multi sport.  How Pete’s put up with it has been a mystery to me – until this morning when I realized that secretly in his heart, he’s a tri geek as well.  I’ll probably be asked to leave the house now that I’ve revealed this or at the very least he’s gonna want to proof the columns before I post them.  Oh well, I’m exercising my right to free speech.
At any rate, I see a lot of dudes are still exercising their rights to look ridiculous.  What is it going to take to make men realize they do not look good wearing a visor, a pair of Nikes and a Speedo two sizes two small and nothing else?

Hellreigel rode by (wearing more than just Speedos, thank God).  I know Pete would love to see him do well.  My girlfriend’s coach, Paul Regensburg also showed up.  He’s always good for a pint and a funny story – not a bad guy to run with either.  He doesn’t half-step you.

So after our little coffee break we came back to the house and the three of us decided to go for a run.  It was hotter than the surface Mars out there.  I managed to slug out 45 minutes before I decided I was doing more harm than good.  I can’t imagine being out there for a full day of racing.  It truly is awe inspiring.

This afternoon there was a Specialized gig to go to.  Pete signed posters for an hour then we came home to find 1,500 copies of “What it Takes” delivered to the house for PH.  I took it upon myself to pilfer one and do a viewing.  I was blown away.  The movie is good – really good.  It’s going to piss off some people, for sure but if anyone wants to see a side of Pete that few have, check it out.

I still haven’t put my pool together yet.  I’ll do that tomorrow.

We didn’t manage to get to a supermarket today so I guess it’ll be back to Lava Java in the morning.
