January 2,
2007:
The New Year!
It's January and it's time to get going with the
plan of attack for 2007.
My big goal for 2007 was the Test of Metal
mountain bike race here in Squamish, BC at the
end of June. Race entry was last night, January
1 at 6 PM. Malaika and I were driving back from
a New Year's ski trip at Silver Star and were
stuck in a snow storm. Our plan to be at home
for the 6 PM online entry into the Test of Metal
didn't happen. We made it to the house at 8 PM,
ran to the computer to register but it was too
late. 800 spots to the Test were already gone.
We made it on to waitlist - all we can do is
hope to get out names pulled from the waitlist
lottery. The other option is to get my Elite
mountain bike license - competitors with an
Elite license don't have to do the online
registration gig for the Test of Metal.
Cycling in Canada has it's gig together compared
to triathlon. You have to earn an Elite
license. So, I am going to train hard and race
even harder at the local mountain bike races to
get enough points to get my Elite mountain bike
license. This will really help my Xterra plans
this year. My weakness at Xterra has been the
technical stuff. Racing in BC is nothing but
roots, drop offs and crazy stuff that I
wouldn't even run on. This is the year I learn
how to ride the technical stuff on a mountain
bike!
A note of caution to all of you with big race
plans for 2007! Don't go crazy with the
training in January and February then burn out
in April. Build into the training volume.
January should be a month of building volume
with very few hard efforts. My plan this month
is to swim 3-4 times per week with volume in the
3000-3400 per workout range. Bike twice a week
on the rollers for 60-90 minutes. Run 3-4 times
per week - I am injured so I am on a walk run
program for 60 minutes per workout. I am
getting my long aerobic sessions cross country
skiing and backcountry skiing. The plan is to
use cross country and backcountry skiing for my
endurance training until March then I am
switching to long runs (hopefully!) and long
rides.
Once again - start a plan but don't go crazy in
January.
Yours in sport,
Pete
