October 17,
2003:
The race is getting close! Only a few more
sleeps until that almighty gun goes off on race
morning. I am still pretty relaxed when not
training. My body is definitely starting to
feel better and my training sessions are going
quite well. Yesterday as I rode up to Hawi from
Kawaihae in the super strong wind I was
surprised at how good I felt. The ride almost
felt easy. Perfect! You want to have those
thoughts before race day.
This morning I got up around 5 AM and went to
the Kona Aquatics Pool which opened at 6 AM. I
wanted to make sure that I got a lane to myself
because I had a swim set that I wanted to do.
It wasn’t anything major some 50’s, 100’s, and
200’s at a bit quicker than Ironman race pace
with a decent amount of rest. The pool was
somewhat quiet and I was left alone in my lane.
I still don’t understand why they keep a 50 M
pool in 25 yards. Argh! At least they have the
ocean close by for open water swims. The Pier
was packed as we drove by on the way home. I
won’t be going anywhere near there until Race
Morning.
After breakfast I did a Canadian media
conference call with Heather and Lori then had
to speed over to the NBC and IRONMAN LIVE
interviews. After the interviews I went to
register then back to the condo to rest up for a
bit.
Next on the training schedule was a run in the
Energy Lab at 12:30 - hottest part of the day -
for some feel good intervals. I felt good on
this run. Hope I feel this good or better on
race day. While I was out on the highway I ran
into the owner of SockGuy, Andrew Block. He,
like myself, is so psyched to be racing Ironman
this year. Andrew is always fun to hang around
with - we are both huge cycling fans. I have
already booked my travel to The Tour after
Ironman Germany next year.
Just got a massage and I am off to meet the
Oakley rep for my race day glasses then a Reebok
appearance at the Reebok store on Alii Drive.
I am already looking forward to watching a
couple episodes of 24 tonight on DVD.
