October 13,
2002:
Woke up at 5 AM. Read VeloNews until the sun
was up and headed for the Pier at 6:30 AM.
There weren’t too many people at the Pier at
that time of the morning, which is nice because
sometimes it can take forever to get in the
water talking to people. I swam the swim course
and about ¾ of the way out to the turn around I
ended up swimming side by side with another
swimmer. He looked familiar but I couldn’t
quite tell who it was. We stopped at the turn
around and it was Chris Legh. He was thinking
the same thing. I have gotten to know Chris
over the years and the more I get to know the
more I like the guy. He is getting ready for
Ironman Florida and is doing a lot of training
here in Kona. The first thing he asked me was
if I was still racing. I said yes of course. I
am totally keen on racing this year. Well he
heard a rumour that I had pulled out of the
race. Hmmm! Wonder how that rumour got
started? Anyway, we swam back to the Pier
together alternating freestyle and backstroke.
We are about the same speed in the water.
When I got back to the condo to eat breakfast my
agent called. He had over 30 people call him
this morning including some of my sponsors
asking him if I was still racing. Man, must be
a quiet rumour week in Kona because that rumour
is the biggest thing happening in Kona today.
Yes, I am still racing!!!
I drove out to Kawaehae with my buddy Sean. We
parked our car at the State Beach and then
headed off on our ride to Hawi. I didn’t think
it was hot but Sean kept mentioning that it was
really hot. I felt good. We saw Chan McRae
motorpacing out there and then we saw Tim and
Nicole Deboom riding out there as well. There
weren’t that many other riders out there. Once
we got back to the car I did a short 20 min.
transition run while Sean jumped in the Ocean.
I basically ended my run in the Ocean. The
State Beach at Kawaehae is SO nice. Beautiful
beach!
We drove back to town and saw Steve Larsen
riding his Cervelo.
I am going to spend the rest of the day hanging
in the condo then go out for an early Dinner.
Wonder where that rumour got started?
