ROAD TO KONA

BUMPY ROAD TO KONA

CLINT LIEN

January 8, 2006: Bumpy Start

Still haven't entered the lottery – but I tried.  Really I did.  On Christmas eve I pulled up the completed entry, read over it, wiped away the cold sweat from my brow and hit the send button.  I even ponied up for the extra $50 Passport money grab AND ticked off the “subscribe to Triathlete” box.  I left nothing to chance.  A moment later a dialog box popped up.  I had exceeded the limit for almost every question on the application.  I'm hoping it's not an IQ test because 250 “characters” is NOT 250 “words.”  I closed down the Window.  Judicious editing was in order.

So now I'm sitting in Pete's condo in Silver Star.  He's due to arrive in three hours and I'm thinking maybe I should have the application sent off before he gets here?

As most of you know I've been working with Pete on his new on-line coaching service, PRPP.  One of the things we did to make the service more effective was to establish a relationship with www.workoutlog.com.  As the name suggests, it's a site to log your workouts but it's also a powerful tool for coach and athlete to communicate.  I decided to use the site for my own training as well.  The trouble with that is now Pete can see what I'm doing (beside procrastinating with the lottery application) to get myself in Kona shape.  While my current level of exercise would be good for some – say a clinically obese pensioner with diabetes, it's not going to get me a qualifying time for a Kona slot, let alone finish the race with any kind of dignity.  So some changes are needed.

And I'll tell you one thing – I'm not going to make any excuses for why I might not be training as much as I could or should be.  I'm working with seven people right now.  They've all got full time jobs.  Most have relationships and they all get their training in.  My athletes inspire me.  I'm hoping it goes both ways.

So the road to Kona has started out with a few bumps but with one hour of slashing I can have the application in my outbox.

And starting tomorrow, rather than waking in the morning and deciding if I'm going to train or not I'll make the decision now – I'll make it once for the whole season and not give it another thought.

Tomorrow I train.

Right now I've got some editing to do.

And to the dude who offered to bribe the WTC to let me in so he could see PR race there again – I don't want to know anything about it!
